OSC to Host Ender’s Game Fan-Fiction Contest

Details to Come

If you’ve been an Ender’s Game fan long enough, you already know that Ender’s Game author, Orson Scott Card, is strongly against fan fiction. He stated in 2004 via his site, “The time to write fan fiction is ‘never.’ You will never do your best work in someone else’s universe, because you’re bound by their rules.” Read Card’s full position on fan-fiction here.

Now it looks like Card’s position has turned around. The Wall Street Journal reports,

“Some authors’ attitudes toward fan fiction are evolving. After spending years fending off fan fiction, and occasionally sending out ‘cease and desis'” letters through his lawyer to block potential copyright violations, science-fiction novelist Orson Scott Card has started courting fan writers. Mr. Card, author of the best-selling ‘Ender’s Game’ series, is planning to host a contest for ‘Ender’s Game’ fan fiction this fall. Fans will be able to submit their work to his Web site. The winning stories will be published as an anthology that will become part of the official ‘canon’ of the ‘Ender’s Game’ series.

‘Every piece of fan fiction is an ad for my book,’ Mr. Card says. ‘What kind of idiot would I be to want that to disappear?”’

You read right! This fall Orson Scott Card will host an Ender’s Game fan-fiction contest, taking submissions via his website. The winning stories (plural!) will be published in an anthology and will be considered official Ender’s Game canon. There are no details yet, but we’ll keep you up to date!
